more hospitals

Well the foot hurting like crazy from the last post turned in to another trip to the ER (3rd in 2 1/2 weeks). This resulted in Jeremy being admitted to the hospital for 3 days with possible arthritic sepsis. Fortunately, they did not have to do surgery and he was treated with IV antibiotics for some unknown infection, (not arthritic sepsis) which caused his foot to swell and be very painful. He's been home for a week now and he actually was able to attend school for 5 days in a row this week. That was definitely an accomplishment. He has his homework all caught up and is keeping his grades up despite the fact that he is out of school just about as much as he is in school these days. He did start the medicine that we had received so much advice against starting for him. With the anemia progressing, it was determined that he is probably losing blood still and we need to be more aggressive with his treatments. We felt backed into a corner and had no other options so we're hoping this will work for him. He now takes between 16 and 22 pills a day. Seems a bit much for a 13 year old but he is the most compliant patient I have ever seen.

Hospitals Galore

What a week it has been...
First up, on Sunday 2 weeks ago, i was in the hospital all day because I had a bad cold or flu or thingamajig. It wasn't too much fun. While I was there, they discovered that I was annemic and I had low blood levels, not too much fun either. So now I had to take iron pills.
On Monday next week, I was once again hospitalized for light-headedness, dizziness, and trouble breathing. My blood levels had dropped even lower, so we went up to Cleveland that night. Next morning, we saw Dr. Kay, who started me on two more pills, one of which we didn't want me to go on. And to top it all off, my foot has started hurting like crazy! Oh well. Just hope i get better soon.

Celeveland Trip Fun in the Sun- and Rain!

Wow, what a great time we had in Cleveland this time! We decided to go see a Broadway play when we got there (Mary Poppins), and it was amazing! I loved the tap dancer on teh ceiling. We also went to the rock and roll Hall of Fame. The prices there were crazy, but a good time was had by all.
The doctor visit was not too too bad, but Dr. Kay is expecting another flare up and will put me on methlotrexate (see: bad medicine) when it happens.

Or so it feels like. Oh well, I took the lacotose intolerance test when we to Cleveland last Tuesday, and I am not lactose intolerant. They made me drink a really nasty thing, though, so I was glad when it was done. However, I did get to play n a playstation, so it was justified!
Other then that, my doctor was sick, so we had to get a "fill-in" doctor, who decided not to put me on this really strong medicine, which they sometimes use for cancer patients, and my regular doctor wanted me to... Oh its really confusing ask my mom.

Jeremy update

Hi everyone,
Jer' had a setback last week. He was experiencing some pain and other related changes that had us both worried. I contacted his nurse at Cleveland and we discussed possible causes for this setback. She did say it could be that he had caught a bug and was reassuring that we'd get him back on track. We reduced the fat in his diet again, Jer wasn't very happy about that, but his symptoms started shortly after eating a hot lunch at school which may have been too high in fat. I also had him stop eating vegetables for this past week and I was very suprised that he had no objections to that recommendation. He's starting to feel better now and yes vegetables are being reintroduced in his diet. He started running track this week. Hopefully the track season will go better than Cross Country did for him. Next Clevalend trip is the first week of April so we'll update you then on how he's doing. Please keep him in your prayers. Happy Spring! PS: My mom wrote this post! PPS: haha

Wow, Sunday was a lot of fun! First off, in church, I got to play two of my favorite songs on the piano: Shine Jesus Shine and Lord, You Have Come. Next, we had a potluck at our school!!! It was so awesome. The games were a lot of fun, especially when the adults joined in. I'll have a big slideshow of pictures on here too, once I figure out how! (Mrs. P., any tips? I'll have to ask you at school!)
PS: We won both basketball games on Saturday against St. Joe's, 34-28 or something and 38-14!

January Cleveland Update

This is a little late, it's been a very busy month, Jeremy had a check-up at Cleveland on the 6th of January. Overall it is was a pretty good appointment. It looks like the pancreatitis is related to his UC. They don't know for sure why this happened to him, (the genetic testing was negative) it may have been caused by some sort of infection. They do know something caused his immune system to turn on himself. Jeremy had pain off and on most of the day on the 5th. This is the first pain he has had since the end of September. When we discussed this with the dietician, it appears this was probably caused by the one slice of an orange I let him eat on the 4th. We were pretty upset that just one slice of an orange could cause so many problems for him. The good news was that his doctor felt he was doing well and he does not need to return to the clinic for 3 months. They allowed us to liberalize the fat in his diet but he needs to continue with a low fiber diet. Jeremy's been pretty happy to eat real meatloaf and real sloppy joes this month. It was great to watch his reaction when the dietician said he should be eating red meat. We were really pleased with Cleveland Clinic again and both of us feel so much more confident that they know what they are doing and they really are doing everything they can to help him. The nurses have been wonderful at helping Jeremy feel comfortable and keeping us well informed. We were very blessed to have clear roads for the drive to Cleveland and back. Bert went with us this time, when he wasn't driving he was quizzing Jeremy on spelling bee words. It made the trip much easier for me.
Jeremy is still feeling good, he's playing basketball and still driving his brother crazy. He's following his diet guidelines closely because he doesn't want to be in pain anymore. We're very thankful for everyone's support during this past year and we're very hopeful that 2009 will be a much healthier year for Jeremy. (Yes, before he writes this for me, his mother wrote this entry)

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!! Finally, its here!!!!!! Mine totally rocked, especially with some totally rocking gifts and a totally rocking Christmas Eve as i went around playing piano for our church, my mom's work, and another church. More labs to update

Hi everyone,
Today we were very happy to receive a call from Brenda at Cleveland with the results of his Pancreatitis related labs. These were the labs that were drawn on October 30th. We knew they would take 6 weeks to get the results and we have been anxiously watching the calendar the last few days. Brenda said the labs for the genetic testing for the pancreatitis were all negative. I know this means he does not have the Cystic Fibrosis gene and the hereditary pancreatitis was also ruled out. I wasn't really sure what the third lab result was related to but it was some form of genetic predisposition for pancreatitis, which was also ruled out. So we are very thankful for such good news again! He'll be going to Cleveland the first week of January to meet with Dr. Kay and determine what we do next. We continue to be very impressed with the staff from Cleveland Clinic and their helpfulness as we try and understand all of this. Thank you for all of your continued support and prayers!

Basketball Update

Finally, basketball season has started!!!!!!! WOO!!!!!
Our team has won both of it's games, 57-33 and 47-19. We're off to a completely phenomenalalala start. WOO YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

News from Cleveland

Hi everyone,
We're back from the 2days at Cleveland. We were very fortunate that the weather and roads were clear. There was alot packed in to the 2 days so I'll try to summarize it here:
First was the consult with Dr. Kay. Mainly no news from this appointment because many of the labs have not come back yet. Most of the questions I asked her she had to defer until after she did the tests or received the lab reports. At least we knew that she had been reviewing Jeremy's records and she was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on with him. The place was really packed. It is a very busy practice but they were still able to see us pretty much on schedule.
Next was the bone density test. The preliminary report did not look the best but Dr. Kay said to not worry about it until she reviewed the final report. That was reassuring. It will help to get him off the Prednisone as soon as possible. For now we're just pushing as much calcium as possible for him.
Then he had the MRI MR/CP. He had been with nothing to eat for 6 hours prior to this test and I have to admit he was a real trooper about this. The test showed that he does not have the pancreatic divisum. Unfortunately we had hoped all summer he did have this as this can be surgically repaired. The pancreatitis mystery remains unsolved.
Then we stayed at the home of Janice's boss's sister who lives about 5 minutes from the hospital. Jeremy played their Wii while drinking his colonoscopy prep. This made the whole situation much more bearable for him. The home was beautiful and Suzy and Greg were so kind and easy to talk to. Jeremy called Suzy Aunt Suzy at one point which came natural to him because he does have an Aunt Suzy and Uncle Greg. He did beat them on Mario Kart Wii often but we should note Greg did beat him once! Only because he fell off the ledge twice, though. We were very blessed to be able to spend the evening with such wonderful people and knowing that we were also so close to the hospital.
The next day we arrived at the hospital at 7am and they were starting his procedures by 7:40am. The nurse did give him some grief about being from Michigan, as the big Michigan Vs Ohio State game is this Saturday. She was reassured when we told her we were not Michigan fans. They completed both scopes within an hour and Jeremy was in recovery. Dr. Kay looked happy when she met with us after the procedures. The inflamation was limited to a small spot, no skip spots, esophagus and small intestine looked good. She decided to reduce the Prednisone (steroids) more and told us to call next week to reduce it some more. She wants to wait for the biopsies before she could say anything for sure about the results. We got the impression that she was very positive about what she saw but it's hard to know for sure. So for now, we're more hopeful than we were on Wednedsay.
We really want to let everyone know that our experience at Cleveland Clinic was exceptional this week. The anesthesiologists were able to sedate Jeremy without using a tube that hurt his throat so when he woke up he was not hoarse and not in pain. They ran an IV of pain medication and anti-nausea meds while they had him under for the procedure. When he woke up he was able to start eating cookies, drinking pop and did not feel nauseous at all. This made his recovery much easier than the last time. All of the staff at Cleveland Clinic were very helpful and went out of their way to try and help Jeremy feel more at ease. His recovery was much quicker this time then when he had the procedures done at a different setting last month. We are very thankful for how much better these procedures were for him.
Jeremy is still on a low fat, low fiber diet. Turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans fortunately fall into these categories. We found a low fat pumpkin pie recipe we'll be trying on Thanksgiving.
We are very thankful to God for the many blessings from this visit, the new friends, the start of a good report, very competent doctors, nurses and anesthesiologists, and clear roads. We're very thankful that there was no additional bad news in Cleveland and that there is possibly some good news. We're also very thankful for all the prayers and support from so many great friends.
So if we don't see you this Thanksgiving, we wish you a very special Thanksgiving and we hope that you know that when we are remembering all of our blessings on Thursday, we'll definitely be remembering you.

Labs update

Just to clarify, Jeremy's totally normal labs are now Amylase 44, Lypase 18. The Lypase was the one that was 2248 in August so we are very thankful that he is now within normal limits. His bone age was 11 years 6 months which is actually 9 months younger than his actual age, which is wonderful news. The IBD serology was non conclusive for IBD, although his doctor did warn us that this test can show false negatives and false positives. They are starting to wean him off the Prednisone, which is a very good thing. The Hemocoult slide was negative for blood. The pancreatitis related labs have not come back yet so hopefully they will be back by the time we go to Cleveland next week.

Prayer/Health update

I just got some lab results back from Cleveland Clinic, and guess what? I'm, like, almost completely normal! (Yeah, I know, you all never thought I was. Oh well.) And also, on Tuesday, I went to see these ladies, who prayed over me in tongues for healing, and they gave me this totally awesome necklace that is good for comfort and healing! Like, sweetness!
So, anyways isn't that cool?
By the way, I think CLeveland Clinic totally ROCKS. They're really great with kids and are, like, so professional. I'm glad we are switching to Cleveland.

Sunday Update

Jeremy had a really good week this week. He felt good all week. He started basketball practice and is looking forward to playing with the team this year. We were previously promised that he would be all cured by the time basketball season started but unfotunately he still has more tests and meds ahead of him. On the 19th and 20th he'll go back to Cleveland to repeat the MRI MR/CP, the colonoscopy and the endoscopy. Until then, we're praying he continues to feel as good as he has been and he can resume all his normal activities.
He is planning on running the Turkeyman race in Lansing again this year. (NOTE: I'm going to run it with my mom!) He probably won't get first place this year but he is hoping to finish the race and that will be great.
We'll update his blog after the next Cleveland visit.

Jeremy was seen by Dr. Kay at Cleveland Clinic on Thursday. The good news is that she was very thorough and did a complete review of all of his records. She spent 3 1/2 hours with him for his initial visit. The bad news is that every diagnosis she thinks he may have are all the ones we have been praying he doesn't have. Currently they are saying he probably has Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis and chronic pancreatitis and is at risk for osteoporosis. They are running alot of labs on him that were not done previously and they did a bone density study as well. He will have a repeat colonoscopy and endoscopy the week before Thanksgiving. His meds were changed and are now more in line with the recommendations of Bert's friend from Florida. There were some areas we were not happy with from his previous hospital so he will be following up now with Cleveland. It was a long trip and the news was pretty discouraging but Jeremy has maintained an upbeat attitude through this all. We both felt that Dr. Kay and her staff were more thorough, professional and were going to do everything they could to help him.
We'll update his blog as we learn anything new with him.
PS: MY MOM WROTE THIS POST!!!! And Cleveland really rocks. We are so going to stay with them!!!!!!
